Rough diamond prices have stabilised
London, England --- MININGREVIEW.COM --- 02 February 2012 - Rough diamond prices have now stabilised after falling from the highs reached in June, according to the newly-published Petra Diamonds interim trading update.

Petra is a leading independent diamond mining group and an increasingly important supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. “Its direct observation is that the market stabilised in December 2011 and, going into 2012, the company expects this trend to continue,” said CEO Johan Dippenaar.


Promising iron ore prospecting in Mozambique
Fremantle, Australia --- MININGREVIEW.COM --- 02 February 2012 -  Baobab Resources plc (Baobab) ‒ an Australian-based, AIM-listed exploration company focused on Mozambique ‒ says it has had positive results from its iron ore prospecting drive in the country.

The company’s activities are focused in Mozambique’s Tete province, where it is prospecting for iron ore deposits.

Blackthorn Resources appoints new director

Goodlace is the new Impala CEO

This comes in the wake of a stay-away by the operation’s rock drill operators (RDO’s), who participated in an illegal work stoppage last week.

Zambia to review mining act
Lusaka, Zambia --- MININGREVIEW.COM --- 31 January 2012 - The government of Zambia has confirmed that it will soon review the Mines and Mineral Development Act to bring it in line with best practices in other legislation in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region.

Mines minister Wilbur Simuusa said here that the government wanted to identify and address the weakness in the current legislation framework to derive maximum benefits from the country's mineral resources. The draft act was expected to be completed by the end of this month before submission to the Ministry of Justice in February.


Zimbabwe government to withdraw platinum export licences
Harare, Zimbabwe --- MININGREVIEW.COM --- 30 January 2012 -  The Zimbabwean government will soon withdraw export licences from mining companies which are exporting raw platinum, in a move specifically designed to promote the value addition of minerals.

A senior government official said in a statement here that the move was designed to force companies to build refineries. Zimbabwe has three platinum mining companies ‒ Zimplats, Unki and Mimosa.

New York, United States --- MININGREVIEW.COM ---30 January 2012 - Governments and companies must undertake a campaign to redouble their efforts to implement international supply chain control standards which are aimed at ending global trade in conflict minerals.


Caledonia doubles production at Blanket mine
Toronto, Canada ---MININGREVIEW.COM --- 27 January 2012 - Canadian-registered and African-focused Caledonia Mining Corporation has announced a successful year in 2011 at its Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe, with production of 35,826oz of gold ‒ an increase of 102% over the previous year.

In a statement released here, Caledonia said it was now confident that it would be able to achieve its targeted gold production of 40,000oz for the current financial year. Discussions with the government of Zimbabwe regarding the indigenisation of the Blanket Mine have continued, it added.
