This is according to its monthly report on mining production and sales.
The main drivers of the increase in mining production were platinum, iron ore and coal. The production of platinum group metals rose by 10.5% and the production of iron ore and coal respectively increased by 11.7% and 6.8%.
Statistics South Africa said seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 0.9% in September 2016 compared with August 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of 2.3% in August 2016 and -2.4% in July 2016. Further, seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 1.5% in the third quarter of 2016 compared with the second quarter of 2016. Iron ore (contributing 3.3 percentage points) was the largest positive contributor.
Meanwhile, mineral sales increased by 10.6% year-on-year in August 2016. The largest positive contributors to the increase of 10.6% were iron ore, coal and gold. The report said that iron ore rose by 50.9%, coal increased by 12% and gold by 14.2%.
Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 8.1% in August 2016 compared with July 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of -11.4% in July 2016 and -7.3% in June 2016.
