Yesterday, thousands of miners joined the families of men who lost their lives following a seismic event that occurred at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu mine on 25 August.

The memorial service commemorated the lives of Motshewa Matuba, Mohlomi Mokhele, Relebokile Mokemane, Mohlabane Moganedi and Moss Sethafuno.

Peter Steenkamp, Harmony Gold’s CEO, voiced the company’s sadness at this tragic event and pledged the company’s support to their families.

He also reiterated the company’s commitment to zero harm, and its full support of the investigation into the accident, which is already underway.

Steenkamp was also unstinting in his praise for the efforts of the volunteers from the Mines Rescue Services:

“Manned by volunteers from across the country, their professionalism and courage is unmatched.

“In addition, we must thank the Department of Mineral Resources, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union and the National Union of Mineworkers for their support during this deeply distressing time.”
