Following a seismic event at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Masakhane shaft at Driefontein yesterday, four people, of 13 trapped underground, have succumbed to their fatal injuries.
Three miners however remain trapped underground – one has been located while the remaining are still unaccounted for. Six of the employees returned to surface are also in hospital.
The seismic event measured 2.2 on the Richter scale.
Management of Sibanye-Stillwater wishes to express its sincere condolences to friends and family of the two deceased employees.
“We thank everyone involved in the rescue operations since yesterday, especially the proto rescue teams and other stakeholders, who are continuing to make every effort to free and to locate the remaining and unaccounted for employees,” the company has stated publically.
Operations at the Masakhane shaft have been suspended.
