Project Manager – (maintenance / capital projects / mechanical engineer)

Responsibilities:CA Mining Mining Review Africa

  • Reporting into the Engineering Manager
  • Manage cross-functional teams responsible for delivering defined project deliverables on time and within budget
  • Manage all on-mine capital projects in the category of Maintenance from identification through definition, execution, commissioning and hand over to operations and project close out.
  • Coordinate all technical design activities on assigned projects, plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate the engineering design and project management on all capital mining projects
  • Responsibilities fall into the following Maintenance categories: Replacement of equipment, Capitalized repairs, Capitalized stripping and production infrastructure
  • Organizes the work into manageable activity clusters (phases)
  • Assists in preparing the project plan by creating a project charter with the team
  • Determine project goals and priorities with management program manager and/or project sponsors
  • Determine priorities among project activities
  • Effectively coordinating the activities of the team to meet project milestones
  • Development of project scope, schedule and cost estimate (including justification)
  • Execution of project scope and management of project schedule and cost.
  • Development of project management plans.
  • Monitoring and controlling of project work.
  • Close out of projects against plan.
  • Manage contracts, monitoring performance and making changes as appropriate.
  • Works closely with Central Supply Function through the Africa procurement process
  • Close out of procurement packages.


  • BSc Mechanical Engineering Degree or BSc Electrical Engineering Degree with extensive mechanical engineering experience
  • Financial / Business qualification advantageous
  • Project Management qualification advantageous
  • 6-8 years’ experience in a similar role within the mining sector
  • Fitness for duty
  • Must have a valid passport and be able to travel to/in the DRC, Zambia
  • May be required to spend long periods of time on the operations, depending the requirements of the projects during construction.

Contractual information:

  • Local ZAR contract
  • Permanent role based in Johannesburg with travel into Africa for certain project periods
