Since the early 1800s Africa has supplied the world with precious mineral resources. However in recent years many promising deposits continue to remain undeveloped. To understand the reasons associated with this fact, Laura Cornish spoke with Ian Enright and Adam Boughton from WorleyParsons.
Ian Enright, the regional director for minerals, metals & chemicals in sub-Saharan Africa, shares his views on the top challenges for major mineral resource projects. “The challenges in Africa really are unique. You can’t expect what works in Canada, Australia or even Latin America to succeed in Africa. The overall limitations in infrastructure and the complexities associated with accessing this infrastructure, pose real challenges to nearly all major projects on the continent. In many instances this infrastructure must cross borders and involve multiple third parties, creating delays and inefficiencies which impact operating costs and time to market.”
