Sustainable development. Two words which have the ability to strike fear into most hearts in the mining sector. Why? Is it because of their sheer ambiguity or the absence of a definitive definition that can be used across countries, sectors and cultures? Is it possibly the fear that building close relationships with stakeholders, through transparent engagement, will bring harsh scrutiny? Regardless of the reason, it seems the mining sector’s tainted past will indefinitely shape public view negatively, despite efforts made to prove otherwise.
