Johannesburg, South Africa — 17 August 2012 – Lonmin CEO Ian Farmer has been diagnosed with a serious illness and admitted to hospital, the platinum group has announced.

Miningmx quotes a company statement issued here which said there was no connection between the Marikana unrest and Farmer’s health. “He wasn’t feeling well and went for a check-up,” said a spokesperson, who declined to give more information about Farmer’s condition. He was expected, though, to stay away from work for a considerable while.

The group said the day-to-day business of the company would temporarily be the responsibility of the Executive Committee under chairman Roger Phillimore’s leadership. In addition, Mohamed Seedat, a director of the business and until 2010 the COO of Lonmin, would join the Exco to provide added support.
