RSA Chamber of Mines concerned by violence in mining communities

The Chamber of Mines refers to killings, many in assassination-style incidents, of a reported six trade unionists on the western limb of the platinum belt.

In addition the Chamber of Mines refers to the latest incident, the tragic murder of the general manager of Harmony Gold’s Tshepong mine in the Free State.

These tragic events are shocking and their impact on the lives of those left behind, those who now face the daunting task of putting back together the pieces of their own lives following the senseless loss of their loved ones taken from them too soon, will be felt for many years to come.

The Chamber of Mines considers it urgent that intensive investigations, including broader intelligence gathering be carried out.

The Chamber of Mines held discussions with police structures where mining issues are discussed, including NATJOC in recent weeks, and has conveyed its serious concern to the relevant authorities in government.

The Chamber of Mines offers its deepest condolences to the loved ones, friends and colleagues of the victims, and hopes that the perpetrators of these murders will be apprehended soon and face the full force of the law.
