The easy pickings – mostly gone in Southern Africa’s coalfields

In a Mining Review Africa discussion on South Africa’s and some key Southern African coal fields, members of SRK’s coal team, Andy Birtles and Graham Soden, emphasised that when companies plan future projects, it is now essential to analyse the coal deposit fully.

“Companies often undertake the initial exploration and, as drill holes are seen as sunk capital, they limit what is done after a certain point,” Soden says. Information is power and members of the coal sector who believe shortcuts can be taken in terms of exploration to gain detailed knowledge of future coal deposit to be mined, risk the success of such projects. “It is not to say that a coal deposit has to be upgraded to a measured coal resource all at once in a developing project, but it is worth doing all the tests to see what is there,” Birtles says.
