Amcu members are planning to down tools at Implats after voting in favour of a strike over wages, and the union has issued a 48 hour strike notice.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has been given permission from a state mediator to launch strikes at some of the world’s top platinum producers, including Impala Platinum (Implats), Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin, threatening at least half of global platinum production.

Meetings between AMCU and the three platinum producers are expected to begin this week to discuss workers’ demands of a doubling of their basic wage, according to Amcu spokesman and national treasurer Jimmy Gama. The union won the right to strike towards the end of 2013.
