Mining resumes at Booysendal

Northam has announced that work has resumed at the Booysendal mine following an unprotected work stoppage of approximately 750 Murray & Roberts Cementation employees.

Northam has reached an agreement with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), the representative union, for a full return to work by the affected Murray & Roberts Cementation (MRC) employees, beginning with the morning shift today.

Booysendal will transition to owner-operator status on 1 May 2018.

Those on strike had been approached by Northam to become full-time employees in a move for Booysendal to become an owner-operating mine, which will result in them becoming permanent Northam employees.

The affected employees had demanded end-of contract termination packages from MRC, who together with AMCU, the representative union, had been in consultation with the affected employees.
