Harmony Gold
An employee has been killed in an underground rail bound related incident at Harmony Gold’s Phakisa mine near Welkom in the Free State.

Harmony Gold says investigations into the accident are underway.

Harmony’s CEO, Peter Steenkamp says: “We are deeply saddened by this accident. My condolences go to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased.”

This is the third incident at Phakisa this year. Last month a mineworker succumbed to his injuries in hospital, following the materials handling accident at the Phakisa mine.

In April, a rock drill operator was also fatally injured in a fall of ground accident.

The 2 426 m-deep Phakisa mine provides jobs to over 3 700 people.
