Platinum major Lonmin confirmed the death of a rock-drill operator at its JV Pandora Shaft 3 following a fall-of-ground on Saturday 2 July.

Lonmin on Monday announced that Mr Siphilo Makhende, a rock-drill operator, was taken to hospital after the incident but sadly succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning, 3 July 2016.

The company reported that the deceased’s family is receiving support and an investigation into the accident was under way, in conjunction with the relevant unions and the Department of Mineral Resources.

No other employees were involved.

In April 2016, the platinum major reported the death of another rock-driller operator following a fall-of-ground incident at the same shaft.

The platinum mine is one of the world’s largest primary producers of PGMs.

Pandora is a 50% Lonmin owned and managed joint venture with the Bapo ba Mogale Traditional Community.
