According to a NUM statement, the rock drill operators spent five days underground at the Modder East Springs-based gold mine without eating and only drinking water. However, the NUM also confirmed that they are still healthy and strong.
Although returned to surface, the workers are still demanding R250 bonus per blast and they want management not to take disciplinary action against them.
“We did not want to come out until our leadership convinced us to because of health reasons. We were prepared to die underground for our demands,” says Peter Witbooi, a NUM member who spent five days underground at Modder East.
