Northam Platinum temporarily suspends operations at Zondereinde mine

This decision to suspend operations was announced after an employee of Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine was killed in an act of violence in the town of Northam, about 20 km from the mine, on Sunday afternoon 5 June 2016.

Northam Platinum said in a media statement that Zondereinde management has condemned the violence and will provide any assistance requested by the South African Police Service in its investigation, as the assailant and motive are unknown at this time.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) confirmed in a statement on Monday that the deceased employee was an active member of the union and was also a hostel resident at the mine.

NUM called on Northam Platinum to issue a reward to make sure that whoever is responsible “is arrested as soon as possible.”

Mine management has also expressed sympathy with the family and colleagues of the deceased employee, while it seeks to assist the family.
