South African platinum sector suffers another fatality

The incident specifically took place the Union mine’s Spud shaft.

“We are deeply saddened by the number of fatalities at our operations in recent months. It is completely unacceptable and we are closely examining the cause of these incidents and any underlying issues that may have been contributing factors,” says Amplats CEO, Chris Griffith.

“It is clear that there is more work to do to achieve a zero harm work place, and all of us at Anglo American Platinum – from our executive team to each individual miner – must take pause and make sure we are doing all we can to ensure safety is top of mind.”

Our thoughts and sympathies are with the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues and we are providing our full support to them at this time.”

A full internal investigation is underway to understand the circumstances of the incident.
