Dr. Sven Baumgarten has taken over as MD at KSB Pumps and Valves South Africa. He has an 18 years track record that has taken him from world-leading research and development of sophisticated pumping systems, through to sales of engineered pumps and valves for some of the world’s most demanding applications in both conventional, as well as nuclear power supply and other equally critical areas.
Following his studies at the University of Braunschweig, Dr Baumgarten accumulated years of experience in fluid dynamics at KSB. He comments: “My time spent in research and development served to strengthen my engineering expertise and gave me access to some of the most advanced techniques and equipment in the industry.
“Several years later, time spent at the top echelons of sales worldwide provided me with the bridge that I needed to bring my passion for engineering together with my desire to work with (and lead) people. It also provided me with a holistic view of international business practices and has prepared me to take over the management at KSB Pumps and Valves South Africa.”
Baumgarten plans to infuse his own new and exciting brand of business with the highly successful and stable operations locally. In addition, he brings a single-minded focus on technology and is 100% committed to driving and enhancing the use of appropriate technology within the African region.
“I expect to continue with business as usual while remaining alert to opportunities that can be taken to find additional growth throughout the region,” he says of his new role.
“We have excellent, skilled people that are motivated and can do everything we need to achieve our goals. We remain one company and one KSB family and that is most definitely something that I will encourage and want to continue with in future.”
Company stalwart moves on
Baumgarten takes over from outgoing MD Wolfgang Demmler, who moves to one of KSB’s global company operations in the USA.
Looking back at his achievements, Demmler attributes much of his success to the people he has worked with during his 11 years at the helm. “I came to SA in November 2004 and officially took over at the start of 2005. Having spent 14 years in headquarters in Germany it was quite an adjustment to get used to a new culture.
“Fortunately, the company I was taking over already had a 45 year history in the market and was substantially committed to manufacturing in SA. This gave me space to make plans for the company and focus on our customers’ requirements. With a good team in place I also had room to seek opportunities for the company and seize opportunities to improve our offering and grow the business.”
He continues: “Our strength is in our strong management team and the fact that we have broad exposure to different markets from agriculture to water, chemical and mining among others. Sub Saharan Africa is the only big market worldwide that still needs to be developed and KSB Pumps and Valves South Africa is perfectly positioned to assist with its development.”
