The top-of-the-line G1 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which has been proven to exceed international quality and safety standards, was officially launched by MSA Africa at the 2015 South African Emergency Services Institute (SAESI) expo.

Aimed at fire engineering and safety experts, the SAESI expo covers all aspects of emergency management systems, including; fire, incident rescue, emergency services and disaster management. SAESI 2015 took place from 1 to 6 November at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.

The G1 SCBA system represents the first time MSA has developed a top-of-the-line SCBA to meet and exceed all high-level international quality and safety standards, such as NFPA (North America) and EN (Europe).

MSA Africa respiratory and fire helmets product manager Suraksha Mohun highlights the fact that the G1 SCBA was built with cutting-edge technology and is designed to meet the ever-increasing needs of future firefighters.

“Providing more functionality than ever before, the G1 Control Module, which is the ‘brain’ of the system, has both dual analogue and colour digital LCD displays, making certain that important status indicators are available at all times,” she points out.

The G1 SCBA has also been designed with integrated technology for future expansion, including the use of Bluetooth, radio frequency identification (RFID) and near field communication (NFC). It also boasts new features, including the elimination of all electronic components from the face piece.

Instead, a ‘Central Power’ feature powers the entire unit from a single battery compartment, while darkness and smoke-piercing ‘buddy lights’ provide visible indicators of critical air supply data from any angle. The G1 SCBA also has improved voice amplification communications for greater safety, while the open port technology offers unrestricted breathing.

Mohun adds that the G1 SCBA has already been well-received in the North American firefighting industry. “In addition to its excellent safety features, the low-profile G1 full face mask also boasts outstanding comfort, and is low-maintenance, making it ideal for firefighting” she continues.

All G1 SCBA units come standard with a swivelling and adjustable hip belt, electronic control unit, telemetry module, lung governed demand valve and buddy breather second connection. Optional features include; head-up display (HUD), voice projection speaker, alphaCLICK high pressure quick connect and QuickFill connection.
