Mngomezulu, who is a trained geologist with a vast background in mineral economics and mineral policy, joined Mintek in his former capacity in 2007 on a five-year term which was further extended for a second five-year term in 2012.
He joined joined the organisation from the Department of Minerals and Energy where he had been the deputy director-general of the Mineral Development branch.
Under his stewardship, the achieved clean audit opinions, awarded by the Auditor-General of South Africa in the 2012/2013, 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 financial years.
He leaves behind an organisation that is sustainable and financially healthy, and is on a firm footing for further growth.
The board still has to pronounce on the appointment of a candidate to fill the position of president and CEO of the organisation, which was advertised in May 2017.
