PwC Mine 2017 report
Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has urged extra vigilance on matters of health and safety at mines during the last quarter of 2016.

The DMR minister is concerned about the attacks on government by some stakeholders in the mining sector, particularly attacks on President Jacob Zuma.

The minister notes that he will be convening a high-level meeting with the sector to discuss the matter, as well as the pertinent issue of health and safety.

Moreover, the last three months of the year have traditionally seen more accidents at mines as the year winds down and the festive season approaches.

“We have had a particularly challenging year with accidents and fatalities at our mines, and would like to plead with employers and mineworkers to ensure that all precautionary measures remain in place during these last three months of the year,” says Zwane.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 67 fatalities at mines, compared to 55 over the same period last year.

“We will continue to intensify our inspections and enforce compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act. We are also proactively engaging with employers and organised labour on these matters,” says Zwane.
