Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane says the 3.4% year-on-year increase in mining production indicates a new period of growth.

South African Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has welcomed the reported 3.4% year-on-year increase in mining production in September, saying the figures indicate that the industry is emerging from a proverbial winter after a long contraction in mining output.

Mining production increased from 0.1% in August – revised upwards from -0.2% year on year.

Zwane urged the industry to ready itself for the next period of growth  and high profitability in a manner that ensures that retrenchments don’t take place during the next downturn.

He added that the growth in mining production is an affirmation of the good work the government is doing in stabilising the industry and realising sustainable benefits from our mineral resources for the people of South Africa.
