“The workers remain underground and are adamant that they will not come to the surface until the employer addresses the long service award issue,” states National Union of Mineworkers branch secretary, Msawenkosi Nkabinde.
“The employer interdicted the strike that was supposed to start on 9 October 2017 but workers are very angry and perceive the action of the employer as a refusal to acknowledge the services they are rendering to the mine,” explains Nkabinde.
He adds that the National Union of Mineworkers is extremely worried about the health and safety of its members and other workers who are staging a sit-in underground.
“The mine management has refused to listen to the demands of our members.”
