Johannesburg, South Africa — 24 July 2013 – The two mineworkers trapped underground after a rock fall at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats’) Bathopele Mine in Rustenburg over the weekend have been found and their bodies recovered.
“They were found around 3.50pm,” Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) shaft leader George Tyobeka told Fin24.

He said the two workers were drilling on Saturday when the accident happened. Amplats said the two workers killed were Mashabela Phuku, 31, and Tsembele Joseph Mashele, 45.

“Mr Phuku was a team leader and Mr Mashele a rock drill operator. They had been working at Bathopele mine for 7 and 5 years respectively,” said spokesperson Thabisile Phumo.

She said all the other workers were safely evacuated and only the two employees had been unaccounted for after the accident on Saturday.

“Mine rescue services and emergency workers were immediately dispatched and worked around the clock to locate the missing employees,” Phumo added.
