mines in the Rustenburg
area
“Everything is normal at our operations in Rustenburg; there are no incidents,” spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole told Bloomberg News by phone..
Earlier, police spokesman Thulani Ngubane had said that four people had been killed at an Amplats mine.
“It’s got nothing to do with a mine; it was five offenders who tried to escape and we arrested three inmates, with two still at large,” said Sarie Peens, a spokeswoman for the correctional services department in the North West province.
In February, nine workers were shot with rubber bullets and three security guards were hurt at an Amplats mine in Rustenburg, about 120km northwest of Johannesburg. Machetes and other sharp objects were used in the attacks, according to police. Output resumed two days later.
