Both Sibanye Gold and Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) last week announced that they are engaged in talks regarding Sibanye’s potential acquisition of Amplats’ Rustenburg mining and concentrating operations.

Sibanye said that the proposed transaction, if successfully concluded, may have an effect on the price at which the company’s securities trade on the JSE and its American depository receipts on the NYSE and that its shareholders should exercise caution when dealing with its shares until a further announcement is made.

Amplats cautioned its own announcement last week that the discussions between the two miners “may or may not lead to a transaction” but that Amplats continues to pursue both a sale and listing option.
