Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 18 September 2008 – The succession of mine deaths in South Africa continues with the announcements by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Impala Platinum that a mineworker has been killed in an accident at one of the company’s platinum mines.
NUM – the country’s largest mining union – said the worker had been killed in what was thought to be a locomotive accident at the Rustenburg. Impala Platinum, confirmed that the miner had been killed as a result of an accident involving a battery-operated locomotive in an underground development area of the mine.
Both the union and the company said NUM safety stewards, as well as inspectors from the Department of Minerals and Energy, had been sent to the accident scene to investigate.
This was the second mine death in a transportation accident this week. Three days ago a mineworker was killed at Anglo Platinum’s Amandelbult mine, near Rustenburg.
