Work in the area has been stopped and management, together with the Department of Minerals and Energy, has commenced investigations.
Meanwhile a worker has been killed in a fall-of-ground incident at AngloGold Ashanti’s Tau Tona mine.
The company announced that work in the section where the accident happened had been halted until an investigation into the cause had been carried out, and the necessary action had been taken to secure the area.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said 3 000 workers would down tools at the company’s Savuka mine to mourn the workers killed there a week ago.
