Aquarius Platinum’s
Marikana mine

Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 03 December 2008 – Aquarius Platinum Limited –an Australian, London and Johannesburg-listed, focused platinum group metals producer in southern Africa – plans to lay off some 200 workers at its Everest mine in South Africa, unless the company and the unions can agree otherwise.

Revealing this in a statement issued here, the Solidarity union pointed out that this cut would represent 12% of the mine’s total workforce of 1 632 workers, adding that it intended to apply to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to lead future negotiations.

The mine is located in Mpumalanga.

It was announced earlier that South Africa had formed a task team to look for ways to stem job cuts sparked by the global financial crisis that has sent metal prices sharply lower and put some 10 000 jobs at risk.
