Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 14 August 2009 – An underground explosion at a coal mine owned by the Shanduka Group in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province has injured 12 workers and trapped an unknown number of miners.
“The explosion occurred this morning at Springlake Colliery near the town of Dundee, and investigations as to what caused it are ongoing,” police spokesman Sibusiso Zikalala told Reuters.

“So far 12 workers are injured,” he added, “and we are conducting a roll call of workers to determine how many are unaccounted for,” he said.

It was not clear what injuries the workers had sustained.
