London, England — 12 July 2012 – Nubian Shield-focused exploration, development and mining company Centamin plc had a record-breaking second quarter of 2012, exceeding its output at its Sukari gold mine in Egypt for the same quarter of last year by 40%, and shattering its production for the first three months of this year by 37%.
A company statement released here revealed that total gold production for the quarter was a record 67,422oz achieved as a result of a strong performance on all key operating metrics.
Quarterly throughput in the Sukari process plant was almost 1.3Mt – a 49% increase on the corresponding quarter in 2011 and a 24% increase on Q1 of 2012. In delivering the record quarter the Sukari mine continued to operate at and above the 5Mtpa run rate.
The open pit delivered total material movement of nearly 6.6Mt and underground ore production for the quarter increased to 117,000t – an increase of 63% on Q1 of 2012 and a 172% improvement on the same quarter of 2011. With higher material movements from the open pit, the run of mine ore stockpile balance increased by 278,000t to 497,000t by the end of the quarter.
