Eskom has implemented rotational loadshedding on Thursday morning for the first time since 2008. Eskom declared an emergency at 06:00 in the morning and asked key industrial customers to reduce load by 10%.

In 2008, mines, factories, offices and households in South Africa were severely affected, having been left without power for extended periods.

Eskom has said that the situation was critical and that the power grid is under extreme pressure, attributing the generation losses to relentless rain in parts of South Africa over the last week that has left its coal supplies wet. The utility says power cuts will last for two hours at a time.
