Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 02 November 2010 – Diversified South African-based resources group Exxaro Resources Limited (Exxaro) has revealed that it will lose 9 000tpm in slag production, after having to shut down Furnace 2 at its Kwazulu Natal mineral sands unit following an incident.

The company said in a statement here that initial assessments indicated that the incident, which occurred last week, had been due to a ‘burn-through on the furnace shell during the metal tap process.’

“We expect a loss of around 9000 tonnes of slag per month, and we should be down for three months,” Exxaro financial director Win de Klerk said in an email to Reuters.

Mineral sands contain titanium minerals and zicorn.
