Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 31 July 2008 – Global resources leader BHP Billiton has suspended operations at its Klipspruit Colliery coal operation, following the death of a mineworker yesterday.
Announcing this here today, the company said Petrus Sipho Kgobo, a drill groundsman, had been fatally injured when a drill rig moved over a high-wall and fell approximately 10m. Petrus was survived by his two children, Naniki (18) and Fikile (14), and his wife Nhlanhla, who is expecting another child.
The announcement added that investigations were being conducted by BHP Billiton and the relevant government authorities. Mining operations at Klipspruit Colliery would remain suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
