Fatal Zimbabwe furnace eruption

Kwekwe, Zimbabwe — MININGREVIEW — 18 January, 2008 – Zimbabwe’s biggest ferro-chrome producer – the Zimbabwe Mining and Smelting Company (Zimasco) – has announced a fatal accident at its plant in the central town of Kwekwe.

Bloomberg News reported today that an announcement by the company here said a worker  had been injured and later died after a furnace eruption in the plant.

“There was no impact on production,” company spokesman Sidwell Jena confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg  from the Zimbabwean capital, Harare.

He denied that the accident had been followed by a  strike, as had been reported yesterday by the Bulawayo Chronicle newspaper.
