Global mining house Glencore has closed its Eland platinum mine near Brits in South Africa’s North West province.

This follows an announcement it made in August of the potential closure mine due to falling commodity prices and operational difficulties.

The closure of the mine will result in job losses in the order of just over 800 jobs, Glencore spokesperson Gugulethu Maquetuka was quoted as saying.

The closure of Eland mine means that the Mototolo mine in Limpopo, jointly owned with Anglo American Platinum, will be Glencore’s only remaining platinum asset in South Africa.
