MDM Engineering group has been appointed as the metallurgical engineering consultant for the phased bankable feasibility study at Gold Fields’ Driefontein mine’s tailings retreatment project. The original bankable feasibility study was completed in December 2009.
The objective of this phased approach is to optimise the project’s cost effectiveness. The project will involve the installation of 2.235 million tonne a month plants treating historical and current tailings from the metallurgical operations at Driefontein and South Deep. The tailings from some 13 slime dams will be recovered and deposited onto one centralised tailings storage facility. At the same time existing tailings storage facilities can be rehabilitated.
George Bennett, MDM executive director says, “We are excited to be involved with a project of this magnitude, which is currently the largest retreatment plant project in South Africa.”
