Gold “’ South African
production down again
Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 18 November 2009 – South Africa’s gold production rose 4.8% in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the previous three months, but output fell 2.9% from the same period last year, the Chamber of Mines has revealed.

In a statement issued here, the Chamber said gold mines in South Africa “’ the world’s third largest producer of bullion “’ had produced 54 110.9 kg of the metal in the quarter to the end of September, compared with 51 634.4 kg the previous quarter.

Last week figures released by Statistics South Africa showed that overall South African mining production in the third quarter of 2009 had decreased by 1.8% compared with the previous three months, and actual estimated total mining production for the quarter dropped by 7.5% compared with the third quarter of 2008.

Gold miners operating in South Africa include AngloGold Ashanti Limited, Gold Fields Limited and Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited.
