Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGTREVIEW.COM — 09 April 2010 – Aurora Empowerment Systems Limited “’ the South African company led by the grandson of Nelson Mandela “’ has entered into an agreement with mineworkers at its Grootvlei gold mine to end the strike there.
This latest development comes in then wake of a three-week industrial action by 2 500 workers over the non-payment of their wages.
A statement issued here by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said the two parties had reached an agreement in terms of which the workers would be paid their February wages by today, and that they would end their strike and return to work by Monday.
“It remains to be seen whether the company will honour its commitment as it has previously failed to” said the NUM’s Grootvlei chairperson Frasy Namanyama. “The NUM calls on the company to honour its commitment and to ensure that workers are regularly remunerated for their labours,” he added.
