Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 21 July 2009 – Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) “’ the world’s second biggest producer of the precious metal “’ has confirmed that all nine mineworkers trapped by a rock fall at its flagship operation in Rustenburg yesterday were fatally injured and their bodies have been recovered.
Revealing this in a statement issued here, Impala said: “We have set aside Friday 24 July 2009 as a day of mourning across our operations. We are presently in the process of informing the families in consultation with the National Union of Mine Workers.
The mineworkers were killed when a major fall of ground occurred yesterday at 14 Shaft in Rustenburg. All operations at the shaft have been suspended.
