Dublin, Ireland — 15 March 2011 – Irish mining and exploration company Kenmare Resources plc produced 76,500t of ilmenite and 7,100t of zircon in January and February of this year at its Moma titanium minerals mine in Mozambique, and company is continuing with its expansion plans.
Confirming this in a statement issued here, the company said Phase Two expansion would be increasing current production design capacity by around 50% from the current 800,000tpa of ilmenite and 50,000tpa of zircon to 1.2Mtpa of ilmenite and 100,000t of zircon. This US$300 million project was scheduled for completion by the end of 2012.
The statement also mentioned the problems affecting heavy mineral concentrate production of 116,500t, notably power outages and adverse weather conditions following cyclones and tropical depressions that hit vast sections of the coastal area in northern Mozambique.
