Mineral resources minister urges mines to tighten up safety

New Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has urged mines to place greater emphasis on matters of health and safety following a mine fatality this week.

The Department of Minerals Resources said in a statement on Wednesday that winch operator Kagiso Rabolo was fatally injured in an accident at Sibanye Gold’s Driefontein operation.

“All mines should continuously aim for zero harm, and ensure every mineworker returns home unharmed, says Zwane, calling for an increased focus on safety during the last quarter when incidents are known to increase.

The chief inspector of mines has dispatched a team to the mine to conduct an in-loco inspection.
