One of the many
mines facing a
new charter from
today

Pretoria, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 30 June 2010  – The South African government will launch its new mining charter today in an effort to increase black ownership in the mining sector, after the previous agreement failed to do so, the Department of Mineral Resources has confirmed.

In a statement issued here the department said that the leaders of government, business and labour would be signing the declaration as a sign of their support for the strategy.

Miningmx reports that a review of the previous charter had been prompted by concerns that a target to transfer 26% of ownership in the industry to black people by 2014 might not be met.

The revised charter will seek to speed up black ownership, skills development, employment equity, procurement, housing and living conditions and mining beneficiation.
