Iron ore and chrome producer Assmang, which is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals and Assore, has commissioned a primary crushing system for its Khumani mine in the Northern Province of South Africa.
The equipment is supplied by Metso Minerals Johannesburg, part of global engineering and technology corporation Metso that last year notched up sales to the value of about EUR4.2 billion in 50 countries.
The system will form part of phase one of Assmang’s new iron ore expansion project and comprises a primary gyratory crusher (60-110 Mk2), one secondary cone crusher (MP1000) and three tertiary cone crushers (MP1000), complemented by auxiliary equipment and erection and commissioning of the units. The project will be completed by November 2007 and the value of the equipment and associated services is an estimated R115 million (US$16 million).
The units installed will have 1,000 kW and 750 kW motors on the primary gyratory and cone crushers respectively, making them amongst the largest machines installed in this region.
