Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 13 July 2011 – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has declared an internal dispute with Northam Platinum, whose business is focused on the mining, processing and marketing of PGMs in the major economic centres of the world, over the company’s reluctance to bargain.
Revealing this in a statement issued here, the NUM said it had approached the platinum producer a number of times for bargaining purposes, but had been sent from pillar to post.
“We have now declared a formal internal dispute in terms of their procedures. Should they fail to bargain or continue to beat about the bush, we will take the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration,” said NUM chief negotiator at Northam Platinum Zwelitsha Tantsi.
The union represents 89% of Northam’s 8,000 workers.
“We hope to meet the company on 26 July, and we hope that this time around they will face the realities,” Tantsi added.
