Cape Town, South Africa — 23 May 2013 – South African labour minister Mildred Oliphant is to meet with two major trade union federations this weekend to discuss the union rivalry currently causing disruptions in the mining sector.

She told a media conference in parliament that the Congress of South African Trade Unions [to which the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is affiliated] and Nactu [to which the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) is affiliated] have been invited to participate in the talks, Fin24 reports.

Oliphant also plans to engage with the leadership of the labour movement to discuss the adversarial nature of South Africa’s industrial relations and “to explore ways to arrest the potential threat to our system of collective bargaining.”

The South African Department of Labour is planning to host a labour relations indaba on the future of collective bargaining and social dialogue.
