Ridge works
Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 08 April, 2008 – Limited production is starting up again at leading iron ore producer Assmang Limited’s ferro-manganese smelter in Cato Ridge, about 60km from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The smelter has been shut down since mid-February when a blast killed six workers.
A statement issued here confirms that the Department of Labour has revoked its prohibition notice relating to one of the six furnaces at the Assmang plant. Assmang was given the green light to switch on furnace number 5, after labour inspectors had met with company management and trade union representatives.

The six plant furnaces were closed down in February immediately after the fatal blast, and Assmang and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa appointed experts to conduct investigations into the incident.
