Earlier this month, Mozambican police announced plans to increase efforts to crack down on illegal mining in Manica on the Zimbabwean border following rising levels of violence among Mozambican and Zimbabwean illegal miners in the region.

The province has witnessed a rise in the number of illegal miners over the past months with reported incidents of theft of mining firms’ deposits. Mozambican police have deported hundreds of Zimbabwean illegal miners since January this year and arrested scores of Mozambicans.

Manica is known for its gold and the Manica gold project, recently acquired by Xtract Resources from Auroch Minerals, has major gold reserves across the region – the consolidation of which could increase its resource.

Xtract Resources is aware of illegal mining in the area as well.
