A coal train on
its way on the 585km
journey to Richards Bay

Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 29 September 2010 – Transnet Freight Rail has delivered a record 17.7Mt of coal to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) for the quarter from 1 July to 30 September 2010.

In a statement issued here, the parastatal said this represented a 16% increase on volumes railed in the same period last year.

“The company has sustained a monthly tempo of 5.7Mt for July and August, topped by 6.2Mt for September,” the statement added.

Transnet Freight Rail acting chief executive Tau Morwe attributed this performance to team work displayed by all role players; improved planning and deviation management; maintenance; and optimal utilisation of resources.

Morwe said he was confident of further improved performance in the third quarter, and of growing the business to reach the long-term plan of delivering 81Mtpa to RBCT.
