Sibanye mine to resume operations

Sibanye Gold’s Beatrix
mine “’ operations should
resume on Monday
Johannesburg, South Africa — 22 February 2013 – Underground operations are set to resume on Monday at Sibanye Gold’s Beatrix mine at Welkom, in the Free State, after a fire earlier this week.

“Partial production will resume on Monday at Beatrix 4 Shaft, Sibanye Gold said in a statement here quoted by Fin24.

“Management has isolated and plugged the affected area. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels are declining at a rate which suggests that operations in the unaffected areas may resume.”

The fire broke out on Tuesday night, and brought operations to a halt. Rescue teams had evacuated the mine by 07:00 on Wednesday, without any injuries, and without employees being exposed to undue danger.

The company said the fire had not been completely extinguished yet, and that the affected areas would remain contained until the fire was dormant.

The shaft produces approximately 7,011ozpm of gold, or 24% of the total amount of gold produced by the Beatrix operation.
